Live Roulette

What is Live Roulette?

Before playing roulette live at our online casino, give yourself the edge by learning the basic bet types and strategies using this Betiton guide. ‘Roulette’ is actually French for ‘little wheel’ – named after the wheel the dealer spins during the game. For this reason, many believe the game originated in Europe. With live roulette, you tune in to a live dealer spinning a ball on the roulette wheel, displaying those classic black and red numbered pockets. Just like the land-based version, you predict where the ball will stop by betting on a number grid, and get a payout if your bet is right.

There are a few differences between playing roulette at a live casino online, like Betiton, and at a land-based one. Usually, the starting bets on live roulette tables online are lower than those at brick-and-mortar casinos. Playing online also means you can play using some handy features, like the ‘x2’ button, which enables you to quickly double the last bet you made. Similarly, the undo button can save you some cash in case of an error. Playing roulette online you can customize the game, even turning the dealer’s voice and the background music on and off if you wish.

The rules of roulette are simple. Players place chips on their chosen number, range of numbers or special bet types as displayed on a grid layout. This layout varies between European, French and American Roulette games. Once all bets are placed, the dealer spins the wheel and drops in the ball. When the wheel stops spinning the ball comes to rest in the winning pocket. You’ll get paid for a winning bet according to the type of bet you selected. You can play exciting online roulette games every day right here at Betiton casino, along with live blackjack and other top games.

The Different Types of Roulette

  • European
  • American
  • French

In all games of roulette, the odds of winning with the different bets remain unchanged, unlike other casino games like poker or blackjack. However, there are some differences between the three versions. In French and European roulette, the wheels are essentially the same. Both have 36 red and black pockets plus a single green zero pocket, but the betting layouts are different. The European layout consists of three horizontal rows of numbers with the single zero bet to the left. These are where the inside bets are placed. Below the number grid is where the outside bets – odds, evens, red, black, low, high, dozens and snake – are placed.

The American roulette wheel has 38 pockets in total and is mainly found in land-based and online casinos all over the USA. The numbered red and black pockets run from 1 up to 36, with the addition of two green pockets for a single and double zero. This extra pocket results in a higher house advantage compared to French or European roulette, since bet payouts remain the same. The number grid layout is vertical, as opposed to the horizontal layout found in European or French roulette. The grid is topped by the two zero bets, while outside bets are to the left of the grid in two columns.

The difference with French Roulette lies mainly in two rules – La Partage and En Prison – that give players a 1.35% advantage. With La Partage, you win back half your stake if you lose an outside bet because the ball landed in the zero pocket. The second gives you an extra opportunity to win an outside bet by re-spinning the wheel if the ball lands on the zero. On the French layout, outside bets are placed on both sides – with High, Even, and Black on one side and Low, Odd and Red on the other. There are also special ‘called’ or ‘announced’ bets available for special number groups.

What are the Different Types of Bets

  1. Inside Bets
  2. Outside Bets
  3. Neighbor Bets

Live roulette has some of the widest betting options as compared to other casino games. You can not only bet on specific numbers, but also groups of numbers or even the colour of the number. The different bets are divided into two – inside and outside bets. Inside bets are placed on the number grid on the layout. Here, you can select a single specific number – which gives the highest payout – or various groups and combinations of numbers. These are generally much more specific bets and have a higher payout reflecting the fact that you are less likely to land them.

Outside bets are the ones you make on the part of the layout that lies outside the number grid. These bets cover larger clusters of the roulette wheel numbers and, for this reason, pay lower odds than inside bets. For example, placing a bet on whether the ball will land on a red or black number or an odd or even number will reward you with an even money payout. Outside bets also allow you to predict whether the number will be low (1-18) or high (19-36). If you bet on a column of 12 numbers – a dozen bet – the potential payout is 2:1.

Neighbour bets are group bets that are made on a number and the four numbers that surround it. This means that you bet on the two numbers to the left and the two numbers to the right of the chosen number on the wheel, not on the layout. A total of 5 chips must be placed. Taking 36 as an example, if you’re going to place a “36 and neighbour bet”, this would include the numbers 30, 11, 36, 13 and 27. In French roulette, you can also bet on ‘Voisins du Zero’ – neighbours of zero – to include a slightly bigger range of numbers.

Main Live Roulette Strategies

  • Martingale
  • Labouchere
  • The d’Alembert

Strategies like the Martingale, Labouchere and d’Alembert can help players stay on track towards landing a roulette bonus. The Martingale strategy involves doubling your bet every time you lose. So the next time you win, you should recover your losses. In contrast, the Labouchere strategy is also a progression system using a line of numbers to determine bet size after a loss. However, instead of recovering previous losses with one bigger win, you recover with multiple smaller wins. The D’Alembert strategy sees your stake rise after a loss and fall after a win. All three strategies work best with even money bets, but all should be used with caution.
