A Quick Look at the NFL

The National Football League (NFL) follows a very specific format. There are 32 teams split into 2 conferences, the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Each conference has 4 divisions.

The tournament consists of a 4-week preseason period, the regular season which last 17 weeks, which is then followed by the playoffs—so there’s plenty of game action available. Knowing the format and the intricacies of the match schedules can help you place better bets. So, read on to learn more about the NFL.

The NFL runs from September through to February of the following year when the Super Bowl is held, usually on the first Sunday of February. Each team plays a total of 16 matches against 13 pre-determined opposing teams, some from each conference, during the regular season.

This means there are 256 games played in total. The top 6 teams from each conference then progress to the playoffs. This is the knock-out section of the tournament consisting of the Wild Card Round, the Divisional Round, and The Conference Championships (essentially a semi-final) that leads to the Super Bowl.

Each team is granted a franchise licence by the NFL to operate in its home city. The main roster of each team can contain up to 53 players, 46 of whom are eligible to play on game days. With Betiton you’ll find some of the best markets around. Simply head to our online sportsbook and choose NFL from the available list.

Gaining Points: Scoring in the NFL

Since the objective of the NFL is to score more points than the opposing team, then punters would do well to know how scoring works in the NFL. There are a total of 4 ways that teams can score in the NFL:

  • Touchdown
  • Extra Points or Conversion
  • Field Goal
  • Safety

Touchdown

The touchdown is the principal way of scoring in the NFL, and it’s arguably the most iconic scoring method in the entirety of American football. To score a touchdown a team needs to do either of 2 things:

  1. running into the opposing team’s end zone with the ball
  2. throwing the ball and having a teammate catch it whilst in the end zone

The touchdown is worth 6 points, which is why it’s an important way of scoring. It’s the scoring method that grants teams the most number of points. Unlike in rugby, players need not touch the ball on the ground for the touchdown to score.

Extra Points/Conversion

This scoring method is known by various names but the method is essentially the same: after a team scores a touchdown, they have the opportunity of scoring once again. This can be done in either of 2 ways, each worth a different number of points:

  1. either by kicking the ball through the upright posts; this is known as a kick and is worth 1 point
  2. by running with the ball to the endzone once more; this is known as a pass and is worth 2 points

Whilst the pass is worth more points, it’s generally much riskier than the kick. Because of this, kicks are simply much more common.

Field Goal

At any point in the game, a team can kick the ball through the upright posts. However, unlike in rugby, for a team to do this, a player must hold the ball on the ground for the kicker to make the kick. If the goal is successful, it’s worth 3 points.

Safety

Contrary to what you might think, this is actually not a foul but a scoring method for the defensive team. If a defending player tackles a player on the offense in their own end zone. This will then score 2 points.

Betiton’s Easy Guide to NFL Betting Markets

Before you could even think of placing your first wager, there are some things that you should first know. We have taken the liberty to provide you with all the necessary information, so do read on to know everything you need to know about sports betting.

The first thing that you should know about sports betting is what betting markets are. Betting markets are the available wagers you’ll encounter on whichever sportsbook you visit. Markets can be offered on any sport, like the UFC, soccer, basketball, and golf.

Markets are offered by bookmakers on certain conditions that need to be fulfilled. These conditions can be anything that might happen in a match or game, such as how many goals will be scored in a game of soccer, and so on.

Moreover, markets are offered alongside their odds, something that we’ll be explaining in more detail later on. Odds are also calculated by bookmakers on the basis of several aspects, including previous performances, current strength, etc.

To get a feel for betting markets, we suggest that you browse through the various markets we offer on our online sportsbook. Finally, to give you a better idea of how markets work, we’ll be looking at a handful of the popular markets we provide.

What to Bet On? Popular Betting Markets

There are many ways you can bet on the NFL. The most popular NFL betting lines are point spreads and over/unders. However, since point spreads are a bit complex for novice bettors, moneyline bets are gaining in popularity.

Of course, these are not the only wagers available for the NFL. As in other sports betting, such as soccer betting, the NFL also has live bets. These are wagers, such as first-half or second-half wagers, that are placed while the game is in progress.

This is a very dynamic, and therefore exciting, way of betting on the NFL. Then there are the future bets, like who’ll win the Super Bowl. Prop bets involve betting on a very specific outcome—such as will Patrick Mahomes throw a 100 yard pass.

To help you better understand how NFL betting markets work, let’s go through a couple of examples together. These are the most popular betting markets that we offer on Betiton. Make sure to also pay attention to the odds; we’ll be explaining these soon.

Moneyline

The math for these is very straightforward, you simply wager on the team you think is going to win.

First to Score

For this wager to win, punters have to correctly predict which team is going to score first in the particular game they’re betting on.

Over/Under

Over/under bets are wagers “against the bookmaker,” so to speak. The bookmaker sets a number of points they think will be scored in a match; players have to bet against the bookmakers predictions by betting on whether there’ll be less (under) or more (over) points.

Touchdown Scorer

This is a simple and enjoyable wager that players can make. For it to win, punters have to correctly guess which players are going to score a touchdown at some point in the game.

Knowing What Chance You Stand

The single most important thing to understand in sports betting is the odds. Once we explain what they are, you’ll easily understand why they’re as important as they are: odds are numbers, or arrangements of numbers, that show you 2 things:

  1. how likely it is for the outcome to happen
  2. how much you’ll gain for making a correct prediction

Having this information in hand will help you make wagers which stand a better chance of being successful. Moreover, you’ll probably want to balance these 2 factors when making your wagers to truly make wise wagers.

Would you like to make a bet that’ll almost surely win? Or would you prefer taking the risk for the chance of getting a jawdropping payout? These are important questions to keep in mind when making any and all of your wagers.

Moreover, it’s good to know that odds can be presented in 3 different formats, these being: decimal, fractional, and American. Each one of these formats shows the same things in different ways, so choosing one is a matter of preference.

To help you decide on which format you prefer, we’ll be explaining how all of them work. However, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that high odds indicate that the outcome is rather unlikely, but you’d be paid handsomely if the bets succeeds.

Low odds, on the other hand, indicate that the event has a high chance of happening but your return won’t be as astounding. Now that we’ve introduced you to what odds are, let’s look a little bit at how they work.

Reading the Odds: Betiton’s Crash Course

Understanding what the odds show you isn’t a difficult matter; in fact, you’ll easily pick it up once we show you how it’s done. Each format has its own ways of indicating the odds, so be sure to read our explanations attentively.

Decimal

The most common format that Canadian players are going to encounter is the decimal. These odds use decimal numbers like 2.45, and the lowest possible number is 1. 1 shows an absolute chance of success—that is, 100%.

Anything higher than 1 starts to become less and less likely. There’s actually a ridiculously simple way of calculating the probability of decimal odds: all you have to do is divide 100 by the decimal odds.

Before looking at an example, let’s explain the reasoning behind the equation: the 100 represents a 100% chance of success, so you’re actually calculating how far off the odds are from 100%. Now let’s look at an example:

  • 100 ÷ 2.45 = 40.8

Therefore, the odds show a 40.8% chance of success. To calculate the payment, there’s another equation that you can follow: simply multiply your bet by the odds and then subtract your original bet from the result. Let’s say you’re playing $15 on 2.45 odds:

  • 15 x 2.45 = 36.75
  • 36.75 – 15 = 21.75

Thus, the payout of the bet is $21.75, whereas your total return is $36.75.

Fractional

Whilst fractional odds are mostly popular in the UK and Ireland, Canadian players might happen upon them. Fractional odds use fractions like 1/6, but they’re actually rather easy to understand if you keep in mind these two tricks we’ll tell you about.

To roughly assess the probability of the odds, simply look at the numbers: if the number on the right is higher, then the odds are low. If, on the other, the number on the left is higher, then the odds are high.

To calculate the payment of the bet, simply take the right number to mean your wager and the left to mean the payout. So, to look at a couple of examples: odds of 1/6 show you that for every $6 you wager, you’ll get $1 in return.

Odds of 1/6 are fairly low then. On the other hand, if we flip the numbers: odds of 6/1 show you that for every $1 you stake, your return will be $6. The payout here is much better but it also shows you that the odds are rather high.

American Odds

The final format is the American odds, so called because of they’re mainly used in the US. However, Canadian players might come across as well, so it’s best to explain them. American odds generally use three-digit numbers, like 450.

However, they can use higher numbers, depending on the odds. These numbers are also represented either as positive or negative, each one showing something different. Positive numbers show you how much you’ll receive for a wager of $100.

Negative numbers, on the other hand, show you how much you need to stake to get a return of $100. At the same time, positive numbers indicate high odds, whilst negative numbers indicate low odds. So, odds of 450 are fairly high.

Moreover, odds of 450 show you that for $100, your return will be $450. If, however, the odds were negative, that is, -450, then they’d be quite low. Futhermore, these odds show you that you need to wager $450 to get a payment of $100.

How to Make Better Bets—Tips and Tipsters

Whilst knowing how to understand odds is extremely important, it won’t help you consistently make smart bets. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that unforeseen injuries can occur during the course of a match.

Moreover, there’s also the simple matter that odds aren’t entirely accurate; in fact, different sportsbooks offer different odds on the same match. However, all is not lost as there are ways to gain the advantage over the odds.

One of these ways is by looking up tips. Tips are pieces of betting advice given by tipsters. Tips usually take the form of suggestions on who to bet on, where to place your bets, which bonuses to claim, which markets to pick, etc.

But should you take tips seriously? Well, tipsters are sports experts that spend countless hours analysing teams, their players, and so on, to give bettors their predictions of who might win a match or even a competition.

Moreover, tipsters also look around the internet, visiting various online sportsbooks to suggest the best odds, markets, and bonuses to punters. As readers can easily note, tips are very useful in helping punters make better bets.

In fact, tips are most useful for beginner bettors for many reasons, most especially because tipsters give their lines of reasoning behind their predictions. This helps beginner bettors understand what factors are important in sports betting.

However, as with other sports, like rugby union, doing your own research, collecting stats, and keeping up with the schedule help you make wise decisions in your betting choices. As such, doing your own research is more important than tips.

There are many reasons for this, including the fact that not even tipsters are 100% accurate in their estimations, and may overlook something that players pick up on. Moreover, isn’t it simply more satisfying to make your own bets?

Find Out How to Look for Tips

Finding tips is an easy matter of using your handy dandy search engine; all you need to do is look up betting tips, and you’ll actually find plenty of tips. In fact, you can find a lot of NFL betting tips available for the current season.

However, our best tips are for players to stick to a budget of money they can afford to lose; to remember to stay healthy and hydrated; and to make time for other important things in their life, like their friends and families.

The Teams With the Best Odds: Favorites

The odds for the NFL change week by week as unexpected upsets and surprisingly victories happen during the course of the NFL. As we’re writing (20th Nov, 2020), the NFL is in its 11th week and there are some interesting predictions being made.

There are 14 games being played this week, most of them on Sunday, with the first game, the Seattle Seahawks against the Arizona Cardinals, has already been played today. Despite predictions to the contrary, the Seahawks came out on top.

The Seahawks managed a total of 28 points over the Cardinals’ 21. We won’t have the chance to mention all of the games of this week, but one game that stands out is the match between the Houston Texans and the New England Patriots.

The predictions favour the Patriots, with the projected score standing at 27 over the Texan’s predicted 24. Another match worth mentioning is the Green Bay Packers against the Indianapolis Colts, with predictions going either way.

The picks for this match are split, with some predictions favouring the Packers, whilst others side with the Colts winning. This’ll be a tricky game to correctly guess, so make sure sure you do plenty of research about these teams.

Finally, one last game worth mentioning is the one featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers versus the Los Angeles Rams. Whilst the Buccaneers are powerful, their performance is dotted with inconsistencies, meaning predictions can go awry.

On the other hand, whilst the Rams definitely haven’t had the same performances as the Buccaneers, their playing is a little more consistent and easier to guess. All in all, this match is rather open to interpretation, and there isn’t an easy way of guessing.

Picks are going either way and matches are quite open, so you should really think these wagers through.

The Favorite Picks and Teams in Canada

The NFL has a huge fan base in Canada. However, there’s no one NFL team that could be described as the absolute favorite team for all Canadians. Instead, fans in each province or territory tend to have their own particular favorite.

In Winnipeg, for example, NFL fans tend to lean towards the Minnesota Vikings. With both regions known for their harsh winters, perhaps more than just football brings these two together.

Teams enjoying big fan bases abroad also make it on to the list of favorite teams in Canada. Some of these include the New England Patriots from Massachusetts and the Green Bay Packers from Wisconsin, to name but two.

Whether you support a particular team or just want to place a bet, at Betiton you’ll find some of the best NFL bets here. With an easy-to-navigate sportsbook, and an exciting welcome offer, why not join us today?

Betiton’s Short History Lesson About the NFL

The National Football League started way back in 1920, after a meeting involving representatives of state teams. At that time it was called the American Professional Football Association but it adopted its current name two years later in 1922. The first president was Jim Thorpe who was an NFL player himself.

Despite being the highest league of professional football in the US, the NFL encountered a lot of competition during its time, most notably from the AFL (American Football League). In 1970, however, the NFL and AFL merged. Since then, the league has continued to grow and expand to become what it is today.

The Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals are the only two founding members that remain till this day, whilst the Green Bay Packers are the oldest NFL franchise that has never relocated or rebranded. It is also worth noting that the first Super Bowl was held in 1967, following the merger with the AFL.

Hosting the NFL—the Who and the Where

Despite the 2019 NFL season having finished not too long ago, predictions for the NFL 2020 are already pouring in. The 2020 NFL regular season began on the 10th of September, 2020, and the last game is set to be played on January 3rd, 2021.

The Playoffs will start on January 9th, 2021, and will culminate with the Super Bowl on February 7th, 2021, which’ll be hosted by the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The NFL’s All-Star Pro Bowl game, an exhibition game to showcase the top players in the league—like the NBA All-Star Games in basketball—will be played on January 31st, 2021, with the stadium yet to be announced.

How do football spreads work?

Not all teams are made equal, and that’s the basic truth of the matter. Because of this simple fact, some games are won before they’ve even started. This happens when a typically weak team is set up against a particularly powerful team; the stronger team would easily win, and this creates a weird situation for bettors.

That’s because when bettors play on the favorite, the payout will be rather paltry. On the other hand, betting on the underdog simply doesn’t work because the odds are way too high. To counteract this, bookmakers came up with the spread bet. The spread bet levels the playing field by creating a point difference between the teams.

The point difference is the spread, and it favours the underdog, giving them an advantage, whilst also giving a disadvantage to the favorite. The way it works is that bets on the favorite only win when they score more points than the spread. Bets on the underdog win either if the underdog wins the match or loses with no less points than the spread.

How do NFL odds work?

Odds are numbers or arrangements of numbers that tell you two things: the risk associated with the bet and the reward if the bet is successful. In other words, the odds will tell you how likely the bet will win, and at the same time, how much you’ll win if the bet manages to be a correct prediction.

Odds are calculated by bookmakers on sportsbooks according to multiple factors, including prior performances by a team, their current strength, their roster of players, and so on. Moreover, they also take into consideration the strength of the opposing team. Knowing how to understand the odds is imperative to making smart bets.

How do you bet without losing?

It’s impossible to be without losing. Losing is a natural part of gambling and as such should be accepted as part of the enjoyment of playing with money. However, there are ways to improve your chances of making correct bets. These include looking up tips, which are pieces of betting advice given by sports experts.

Tips can be very helpful in educating beginner bettors and helping them find fantastic markets at great-value odds. However, the best course of action would definitely be doing your own research. This is ideal for many reasons, including because making your own bets is simply more satisfying than following someone else’s advice.

Why would you bet on negative odds?

Negative odds are part of the odds system known as “American odds” or “moneyline odds.” These work with positive and negative numbers, each showing different things. Positive odds generally show that an event is somewhat unlikely but can reward the bettor handsomely if the bet is correct.

On the other hand, negative odds indicate that the chances of success are reasonably high but the payout won’t be as high. Therefore, you might want to bet on negative odds to make a safe bet that will be much more likely to win. Remember that betting is only for fun and shouldn’t be considered a profitable pursuit.
