How Does Snooker Work?

snooker table and snooker trophy

Snooker is played on a green felt table with 22 balls, including a single white cue ball. There are also 15 red and six coloured balls, namely yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. Each ball is worth a variable number of points, which are added to each player’s score when they pocket them. Here are the valuations:

  • Red Balls: One point each
  • Yellow Ball: Two points
  • Green Ball: Three points
  • Brown Ball: Four points
  • Blue Ball: Five points
  • Pink Ball: Six points
  • Black Ball: Seven points

Players take turns attempting to pocket balls on the table, using the cue stick. They must attempt to pot balls in a specific sequence, alternating reds with their choice of colour. The colours are subsequently respotted, but reds remain off the table once they’ve been potted.

After the reds have been removed, players must clear the colours in the order that they’re listed above. The aim is to compile breaks and score as many points as possible. The player with the most points at the end of a frame will be the winner. If you’re unable to pot a ball during a visit to the table, you can attempt to play safe and potentially snooker your opponent. This will prevent them from being able to strike a red ball directly.

Snooker matches will feature a finite number of frames, which are contested in a best-of format.

gal ball, then their opponent will be awarded penalty points. Four points will be awarded if they fail to hit the object ball, but if blue, pink, or black is hit out of turn, then their opponent will receive, 5, 6, or 7 points.

The English Open

The English Open is a ranking event that was established back in 2016, and it forms part of the Home Nations Series that consists of the Scottish Open, Welsh Open, and the Northern Ireland Open. The venue for this event has changed down the years, but it is currently played at the Brentwood Centre. Neil Robertson is the defending champion having prevailed in 2024, while he’s one of just three players (alongside Judd Trump and Mark Selby) to win multiple titles

The World Championship

The World Snooker Championship is the sport’s most prestigious and lucrative event. It has been held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield since 1977, while a cheque for £500,000 awaits each annual winner. The next iteration will take place between April 18th and May 4th 2026, with China’s Zhao Xintong heading to Yorkshire as the defending champion. In modern times, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan are the tournament’s two most successful players, winning seven titles apiece. Prior to the modernisation of the sport, Joe Davis won the most world titles having prevailed on 15 occasions.

The Masters

The Masters is an invitational event that has been held each year since 1975, making it one of the oldest snooker tournaments. This is also a highly prestigious competition despite its non-ranking nature, while it has been played at the Alexandra Palace in London since 2012. Shaun Murphy is the defending champion having won his second title in 2024, but Ronnie O’Sullivan’s tally of eight victories in 14 finals makes him the most successful Masters’ player. Stephen Hendry has won the competition on six occasions.

UK Championship

The UK Championship is another ranking event, which forms part of snooker’s Triple Crown (alongside the The Masters and World Championship). It’s usually held at the Barbican Centre in York and will take place between November 29th and December 7th in 2025. Ronnie O’Sullivan is the tournament’s most successful player, winning eight titles from just nine finals (he prevailed most recently in 2023). Judd Trump is the defending champion, however, having lifted his second crown in 2024.

World Grand Prix

The World Grand Prix was inaugurated in 2015 as a non-ranking event. It became a ranking event the following year, and is usually played at a different location every year. It features the 32 highest ranked players in the world, while it has been won most often by Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan (both three times). Two-time winner Neil Robertson is the defending champion heading into the 2025/26 season, having thrashed Stuart Bingham 10-0 in Hong Kong in the most recent final.

German Masters

The modern carnation of the German Masters was established as a ranking event in 2011, while it’s usually held at the Tempodrom in Berlin. It has a total prize fund of £550,400. There have been four multiple winners of the Germans Masters, including Kyren Wilson (who claimed his second title in 2025 after a 10-9 victory over Barr Hawkins in the final). Mark Williams and Ali Carter have also picked up two wins apiece, while Judd Trump is the tournament’s most successful player with three titles.

The Welsh Open

The Welsh Open is a ranking tournament that has been held every year since 1992. Interestingly, it replaced the Welsh Professional Championship, which ran from 1980 and was only open to Welsh natives. Scotsman John Higgins is the most successful Welsh Open player, having won five titles and appeared in seven finals overall. Ronnie O’Sullivan has triumphed on four occasions, while Stephen Hendry won the title on three separate occasions during his career.

Snooker Betting Markets

As part of our snooker tournament coverage at Betiton, you’ll find a large and diverse selection of betting markets. Understanding these markets is key, especially if you want to create value when engaging in match betting. This is particularly important when betting during the early stages of specific tournaments.

  • Match Winner: Also known as the moneyline, this is the most common snooker wager. It requires you to pick the winner of a particular match. Remember, there are no tied matches in professional snooker, so this type of bet has a superior chance of winning when compared to some other sports.
  • Outright Winner: With outright betting, you’ll pick the eventual winner of a tournament. This type of market typically unlocks extended odds, due to the number of potential winners and outcomes in play. This is especially true ahead of the highest ranking tournaments, where the world’s best players will compete.
  • Frame Winner: Snooker games are made up of frames, and with this market you’re simply predicting the player that will win a particular frame. They do not have to win the match for the bet to pay out, so long as they outscore their opponent in the frame that you wager on. When you are engaging in snooker live betting, you can wager on the winner of the current or next frame.
  • Correct Score: With such a bet, you’re trying to predict the exact score of a match. This is incredibly hard to do with any degree of accuracy, so correct score betting usually unlocks enhanced odds. It’s better to wager on the correct score during shorter matches, where there are fewer potential outcomes overall.
  • Total Frames: This is an over/under market in which you’ll bet on the total number of frames that will be played in a particular match. We’ll set a total as an individual betting line, based on the underlying format and potential duration of a match. You’ll then bet on whether the actual number of frames contested will be over or under this threshold.
  • Race to X Frames: This is a bet where you have to predict which player will be the first to win a certain number of frames. For example, in a best-of-17 frame match, Betiton may allow you to bet on the player who will be the first to win seven frames. This market is synonymous with relatively low odds and high implied probability values.
  • Frame Handicap: A handicap bet enables you to ascribe a virtual deficit to one player against another. It’s most commonly used to unlock enhanced odds when backing a heavy betting favourite. Most commonly, you’ll back the favourite to win with a -1.5 frame handicap, and this will pay out so long as they triumph by two clear frames or more. The nature of the handicap will vary depending on the potential duration of a game.

Snooker Betting Tips

Given the extensive range of snooker betting markets available at Betiton UK, it can be hard to identify the best value opportunities or odds. So, we’ve prepared some expert betting tips to help you make the most of your bankroll:

  • Analyse Player Form: Player form is the most important metric when picking an outright or match winner. Players who have performed to a high standard in recent tournaments will be confident and most likely queuing well, affording them crucial momentum against their opponents. It should also be noted that players like Ronnie O’Sullivan typically reserve their best form for major tournaments like the Snooker World Championship, so you may need to give more weight to such competitions.
  • Have a Look at the Head-to-Head: Similarly, the analysis of relevant head-to-head records can prove insightful when betting on snooker matches. Some players may have a decisive historic advantage over others, which could potentially influence your picks and help you to identify value betting opportunities. You can access comprehensive H2H data between professional players using CueTracker, which is home to up-to-date information.
  • Wager Early When Placing Outright Bets: If you want to engage in outright snooker betting, we’d recommend that you wager as early as possible. Typically, outright odds are particularly competitive ahead of tournaments like the World Championship, due to the number of potential winners and outcomes. However, the favourites are likely to see their odds shorten as the competition draws closer, so betting early will enable you to lock in the best price.

Do You Have to Win by Two Frames in Snooker?

No, a player just has to be the first one to hit a pre-determined number of frames. For example, the World Championship final is the best of 35 frames, so the first player to win 18 frames gets crowned World Champion.

How Many Frames Do You Need to Win in Snooker?

Well, this depends on the tournament that is being played as well as the stage of the tournament. The early rounds of an event will have fewer frames required to win, and this number will increase the deeper we go into a tournament. The final of any event will usually always have the most number of frames.
