While punters from the Emerald Island enjoy placing bets on a range of sports, we are not exaggerating when we say that Gaelic football is the most popular.

This is a sport that can be traced by hundreds of years, and hundreds of thousands from across Ireland tune in to watch and place bets on the big matches.

If you want to start betting on Gaelic games such as Gaelic football, then check out this guide as we are going to take you through the different markets, best competitions, and provide some valuable betting tips.

Gaelic Football Rules Explained by Betiton Ireland

Obviously, before you go ahead and start placing bets on this sport, you need to be extremely familiar with Gaelic football rules. There is nothing preventing you from betting on this sport with little knowledge, but do not be too surprised when your luck does not hold out and you lose more times than you win. Below we have provided you with the main rules of Gaelic football:

  • A player is only allowed to carry the ball in their hands for four steps, and the ball can be passed to a team-mate via a hand-pass or a kick – the former is where the player with his fist or palm.
  • When four steps have been taken, the player with the ball, if they do not want to pass it, must drop the ball down onto their foot and kick it back up into their hands – the ball is not allowed to bounce twice.
  • Players can try and win possession of the ball by shoulder charging their opponents or using their hands.
  • To score points, players have to put the ball over the bar of their opponent’s goal, using their foot or first – this scores them one point. If a player can manage to kick the ball into the net past the goalkeeper, then they will receive three points for their team.
  • There are three officials, a ref and two linesmen, and they raise a green flag to signal a goal, while a white flag is used to signal a point being scored.

Gaelic Football Betting Odds

There are three main odds formats at the top Irish football betting websites, and these are decimal, fractional, and American.

At Betiton Ireland, we have all three formats available, but the default settings are decimal – you can toggle between the three formats in the top right.

However, if you are new to placing bets on Gaelic football, then we suggest that you stick to decimal since they are the simplest to understand.

Let us briefly explain each format now:

  • Decimal odds: The number tells you the total payout and not the total profit. If you bet €10 on odds of 4.00 and it is a winning bet, you will get €40 back – €30 profit and €10 stake.
  • Fractional odds: The number indicates the amount that is up for grabs for every €1 that you bet. For example, if you bet €10 on odds of 6/1 and you land a winner, you will get a return of €70 – €10 wager and €60 of profit.
  • American odds: These come with + and – signs, with the former representing the underdogs and the latter representing the favourites. The + is how much you can potentially land by placing a $100 bet, while the – is the amount that you would have to stake to earn $100 from a successful bet.

This bet type removes the possibility of a tie. Thus, you are betting on either the home or away side to win. If the game finishes in a draw, then you will get your stake back. Since you have this insurance, the odds on offer will not be as high as the match winner odds.

If you have confidence in a team, you can try to shoot for bigger returns by placing a bet on how much they will win by. Your bookmaker will give you a total, and you bet on whether your selected team will finish over the total or under it. Alternatively, you can wager on a specific winning margin.
