How to Play Online Roulette

Once all players have placed their bets, a dealer spins the roulette wheel in one direction, and a ball in the opposite direction of the rotation of the wheel. Eventually, the ball will slow down, lose its momentum, pass through the deflectors, and stop inside one of the coloured and numbered pockets of the wheel.

Based on the result, payouts are then issued to the successful betters. There are different types of bets all with varying online roulette odds, referred to as outside bets and inside bets, which we discuss further down the page.

How to Win at Online Roulette

There is a variety of ways to win roulette in an online casino. However, despite all of these ways, the objective of online roulette remains the same: guessing where the ball will land on the roulette wheel. To achieve this objective, there are a number of bets you can place.

The most common bets that you’ll come across are known as the inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets are found on the “inside” of the roulette table bet layout, whilst outside bets are found on the “outside” of the roulette table, which is why they’re called like that. Inside bets allow you to bet on the numbers of the roulette wheel.

These are very common albeit risky bets in roulette online. This is because it’s more difficult to correctly guess where the ball will land with inside bets—but the payout will be far greater. However, you can offset the risk of inside bets with the far less risky outside bets, which allow you to bet on the “quality” of the pockets.

With outside bets, you can bet on whether the number the ball will land on is going to be odd or even; of a red or black pocket; within the first, second, or third dozen, etc. These are far easier to guess, thus being less risky than the inside bets—but also offering a lower payout. Ideally, then, you should use a healthy mixture of inside and outside bets in order to win at roulette.

Roulette Table

A standard roulette table layout (for European Roulette) will have the zero at the top, followed by a layout of all the numbers featured on the wheel, coloured accordingly. In addition, roulette table layouts are designed to clearly show what bets are being placed, including bets on colours, odds and evens, high and low numbers, columns, and so on. If you decide to play online roulette on your mobile device, you’ll likely come across the vertical layout of a roulette table, with numbers facing your way. This layout is deliberately made in favour of user comfort and in no way changes the game.

American Roulette changes up the standard roulette layout not just by adding a double zero pocket, but also switches up the standard colours of most double-digit numbers. In those cases, you’ll find ten and eleven are both black, for instance. Instead of alternating between red and black, the American roulette follows its own unique pattern.

Roulette Wheel

The roulette wheel is pretty simple and as we previously explained, varies depending on the type of online roulette game you’re playing. Typically, a roulette wheel will have 37 pockets for the numbers, with consecutive numbers between 0 and 36, which are coloured and alternate between black and red with the exception of the zero, which is always green.

Inside bets can be found at the head of the roulette table. You can make several types of inside bets. For example, you can bet on a single number, or on a cluster of numbers forming a pattern on the table. Outside Bets

You’ll find the outside bets below the inside bets on a roulette table. Outside bets are not placed on specific roulette wheel numbers. Instead, they focus on other features of the roulette wheel, such as the pocket colours. Considering they cover larger sections of the wheel, your chance of winning is also higher. This makes the payouts for outside bets in roulette smaller. Plainly put, outside bets are low-risk, offer a bigger chance of guessing where the ball will land, and therefore reward smaller payouts.

Another important detail worth mentioning is even money bets. This is a name given to bets that pay even money (1:1). Have a look at the table we have compiled below to gain a better understanding of outside bets in roulette.

Special Bets

Special bets are available in the European or French variants of online roulette. American roulette doesn’t offer the option to place special bets so this should be kept in mind before you learn about them. Special bets are also sometimes referred to as call bets instead because they’re usually ‘called’ or ‘announced’ when you’re playing roulette in person.

In fact, you’ll notice that these special bets aren’t on the standard roulette table, but most variants offer these types of bets on an additional table dedicated to these bets, next to the regular roulette table. Since these bets are more common in the French version of roulette, you’ll notice that all the names are in French.

  • Les Voisons du Zéro – This bet translates to ‘neighbours of zero’ and covers the numbers, or ‘neighbours’ of zero. It covers a total of seventeen numbers that are between 22 and 25 (including both numbers).You need a minimum of nine chips to place this type of bet.
  • Jeu Zero – Translating to ‘zero game’, the Jeu Zero is a bet on the seven numbers closest to the zero (including zero) and it requires a minimum of four chips to place it.
  • Les Finales – There are two types of Les Finales bets in roulette: Finales en Plein and Finales a Cheval. These are some of the most complicated bets in roulette since they’re so specific.
    • The Finales en Plein bet is a bet on the numbers which end with the same number. So, for example, you can bet on all of the numbers that end with 1: 1–11–21–31. This is known as “Finale 1 en plein”. 
    • The Finales a Cheval bets are even more complicated than the Finales en Plein. In fact, this is a bet on numbers that include 2 numbers of your choosing. Then, depending on the positions of the numbers, you need to place either split bets or a combination of split and straight bets. For example: if you wish to bet on the numbers 4 and 7, you need to place 3 split bets: 4/7, 14/17, and 24/27. However, betting on 8 and 9 has to be done like so: 8/9, 18, 19, 28/29. 
  • Tiers du Cylindre – This bet type is French for ‘third of the wheel’ and it’s a bet on one-third of the wheel. The numbers in this bet are 33 through 27.
  • Les Orphelins – Les Orphelins, or ‘the orphans’ in English, is a bet that covers the two sections of the wheel outside the Tiers du Cylindre and Voisins du Zéro bet sections. It includes eight numbers which are 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, and 9.
