This presents you with plenty of great opportunities to get the most out of your Betiton online cricket betting adventure!
What Is Cricket Betting?
Cricket betting is the practise of making bets on various outcomes that can take place during a game of cricket. A cricket bet is essentially an amount of money that you wager on this event or result happening. When you bet on cricket, you can wager on anything that happens in the sport. This ranges from who will win the match, to who will win an entire tournament, to who will win the coin toss to which player will score the most runs, to methods of dismissal… the list can go on, there are a ton of cricket betting markets for you to choose from here on Betiton’s Cricket Betting sportsbook!
Cricket Betting Markets
The various cricket bets that are available for you to make on our online sportsbook are known as cricket betting markets. Each betting market has a number that represents the likelihood of that outcome occurring – those are called odds. You’ll be glad to know that Betiton offers a variety of cricket bet markets to choose from if you’re the kind of gambler who appreciates a large choice of betting combinations.
The most common cricket bets are pre-game outright bets (such as New Zealand to beat England). It is a bet on a particular outcome of a match before it starts. This bet market is known as a match bet.
Match betting online is very simple and is the easiest kind of online bet to make. More match bets include:
- Match winner
- Coin Toss winner
- Top batsman
- Top bowler
Series Winner Bet
Another simple bet is the Series Winner. Similar to a match bet, the series winner bet is on who will be the overall cricket series winner. An example would be betting on Australia to win the Ashes.
Proposition bets, commonly referred to as prop bets, are bets you can make on the performance of each team and the performance of individual players. These cricket betting options encompass just about any event that might occur during a game, such as whether a specific run total will be exceeded, individual player performances, and who will win the toss. They are not directly tied to the final outcome of a match or series.
The Most Popular Cricket Betting Markets
With this market, you are simply betting on the team that you feel will go ahead and win. It is a very simple cricket bet to make since all you do is pick a team and then hope for them to win!
If there is a big cricket tournament on such as the Cricket World Cup, Twenty20 World Cup, or the IPL, then you have the chance of predicting which team will go on to win the tournament. It is strongly advised to place this type of bet as soon as you can because generous odds will decrease as the competition progresses.
In cricket, a coin toss is done to see which team will bat first and which team will bowl first. With this type of bet, you are simply trying to predict which captain will win the coin toss. You can bet on the outcome of the coin toss if you so wish, but since it is evenly 50/50 you will never make a big profit from such a bet – it is simply one of those that you can place if you are after a bit of light-hearted fun.
Do you reckon that you can predict which player will score the most runs in a match? Since there are ten other players on a team, each with a distinct individual run rate, it’s difficult to get this kind of cricket bet right. Typically though, it comes with huge odds.
Top Bowler – Top Wicket-Taker Betting
You can also try predicting which player will take the most wickets. Again, you can usually find good cricket betting odds to benefit from because this kind of gamble is difficult to anticipate.
The Most Sixes
When it comes to the ODI and T20 formats, the batsmen try to hit every ball out of the boundary in order to score as many runs as possible. You can often place a bet on which team you think will hit the most sixes.
Highest Individual Score
This is similar to the top batsman bet mentioned above, but the key difference is that you are betting on the player that you will think will score the most runs out of both teams. These bets come with high odds since it’s more difficult to predict this type of cricket market correctly than it is to predict who will be a team’s best batsman.
First Dismissal Method
A batsman can be dismissed in a variety of different ways in cricket. The six methods of dismissal are:
- Caught out
- Leg before wicket (LBW)
- Stumped out
- Bowled out
You can try and predict how the first batsman to get out in the game will be dismissed. Given the variety of dismissing techniques that can happen, this is difficult to get right. The betting odds will be extremely high, so if you are able to estimate properly, you will be in for some big winnings!
Batsman to Score a Fifty/Hundred
If you think that a certain batsman will score many runs you can put some money on that player to score either a half-century or a century.
This is a bet where you put your money on whether you think the match is going to end that day or not. Naturally it only applies to limited over matches. You should consider placing a bet that the match won’t be finished on the day if you believe that the weather or another cause will prevent it from concluding that day. You can simply bet “yes” or “no” on whether the match will end on the appointed day when placing a wager on a completed match.
Over/Under Score – Innings Runs
You will have to make an educated judgement as to how many runs will be scored in the first innings of a cricket match in order to place this kind of bet. It is also called an Over/Under score bet. When betting on this market, Betiton will post a specific amount of runs, say 246.5, and you will have to guess whether the actual number of runs scored will be over or under that number.
Over/Under Score – Total Boundaries
You can also place an Over/Under bet on the total number of boundaries that are hit in a match. Once again, Betiton provides you with a number, and then you have to decide whether the final boundary count will be over or under that number.
You can also choose to bet on weather a team’s final score will be an odd or an even number. This bet is very simple to understand because there are only two possible outcomes. It’s also a cricket bet where luck plays a bigger role than cricket expertise. It’s more for entertainment value than financial benefit.
Team with Top Batsman
Rather than betting on the top batsman of the match, you may instead opt to bet on which team he will belong to. The team that will have the batsman that scores that most runs is only one of two options for you to choose from so your chances are a lot better that if you were to try predict the specific player. Naturally, with reduced odds, your profit margins will also be smaller.
Man of the Match
The “Man of the Match” award is presented to the player who performed the best during the match,as is done in any other sport. For sports betting, you can place a bet on who you believe will win the award. Given that each of the 22 players on the field has a chance of winning the prize, it is difficult to predict the outcome, which is frequently reflected in the odds that you will be offered. You will enjoy a nice hefty profit if you correctly place this kind of bet.

What Are Odds in Cricket Betting?
Understanding how cricket betting odds work is crucial for any player that wishes to enjoy betting on cricket. In fact, there are 2 reasons as to why understanding cricket odds is incredibly important. Firstly, these numbers let you know the likelihood of a given outcome for a particular event.
Secondly, they also tell you how much money you can win if your predictions are correct. Balancing these 2 factors is key when going to play any cricket bet. These 2 factors work against each other in the odds. That is to say that when the odds are high then the chances of success are low, but the potential profit is equally high.
On the other hand, the reverse is true when it comes to low cricket odds. Finally, it might be good for you to know that bookmakers and online betting sites themselves are the ones to calculates the odds of a market. To do so, they analyse various factors, such as a team’s current composition, their track record, and so on.
How to Understand Cricket Odds Formats at Betiton™ NZ
Knowing how to read cricket odds is imperative if you want to use them to your advantage. However, you’re first going to have to know that there are 3 main formats available. These are: decimal, fractional, and American.
Whilst these formats may seem wildly different, the differences between them aren’t all that great. In fact, there are only 2 main differences. These are 1) how they represent the cricket odds and 2) where in the world they’re most commonly used.
Other than that, the formats are interchangeable, so simply choose the one that’s best for you. We’ll be explaining a bit about these formats in the coming sections. However, if you wish to find out how to understand the different odds formats you can find on our sportsbook, you can consult our detailed guide by clicking on the hyperlink.
The decimal format is highly popular in continental Europe, which is why you’ll sometimes find it called “European odds”. However, this format is also used in Canada, Australia, and of course, New Zealand. As you can easily guess, this format makes use of decimal numbers to present cricket odds. E.g. 2.4.
The fractional format is mostly popular in the UK, which is why this format is also called “British odds”. However, you’ll find it used by Irish bookmakers as well. As you can tell, this format makes use of fractions in order to present the cricket odds of a market. E.g. 5/7.
Finally, the American format is mainly used in the US which explains their name. However, you can also find them called “US odds”. This format uses a system of 3-digit numbers, pluses and minuses to display cricket odds. E.g. -540.
Live Cricket Betting at Betiton™ NZ
When betting on cricket, you also have the option of placing cricket bets live. Live cricket betting is when you bet on an outcome of an ongoing event that has already begun. This is a very popular way of betting on cricket because it takes advantage of the odds as they fluctuate during the game. Moreover, it naturally adds to the excitement of watching a cricket match!
With “in-play” or “in-running” betting markets you can bet on the number of runs that will be scored off the next ball or whether the next over will be a maiden or not. You will find more options for live cricket betting than you will for any other sport, which is what makes cricket such a great sport to bet on!
In order to place a live cricket bet you’ll have to follow the same steps as you would when you place any other bet. We’ll be explaining how you can place a regular cricket bet in the next section. However, when you go on our sportsbook, you would need to go to the “IN-PLAY” section to access our live markets. You can then bet on them by simply clicking on them.

We provide markets and cricket odds on the biggest tournaments and matches in the calendar, including all of the championships organised by the ICC. ICC Cricket World Cup Betting
The International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket World Cup is the biggest international cricket event on the planet and one of the most important events in cricket. It is often touted as the 4th largest event in the sporting calendar.
It’s a One Day cricket tournament that happens every 4 years. Prior to the actual tournament, a qualification phase takes place over the 3 years that lead up to the tournament. This will determine the teams that are going to participate in the championship.
Once the teams are decided, the World Cup follows a single round-robin, group-stage format, with 10 teams playing each other once. Every match is important because at the end of the group stage the teams ranked in the top 4 qualify for the semi-finals.
The winners of the semi-finals will then go on to the final. The final then determines who will be crowned the winner of the Cricket World Cup and one of the best teams in the world! If you’d like to do some Cricket World Cup betting, our sportsbook is the perfect place for you to bet!
ICC T20 World Cup Betting
The powerhouse of Twenty20 international cricket is undoubtedly the illustrious ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The highly-anticipated tournament occurs every 2 years. The next edition of the tournament will be taking place in Australia between the October 16th and November 13th, 2022.
The T20 World Cup consists of 16 teams (which is set to be expanded to 24 in 2024) playing a number of stages to see who will be crowned the winner. These 16 teams comprise the top 10 ranked ICC full members and 6 added ICC members decided during the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier.
The format then proceeds in a preliminary rounds stage, a Super 10 or 12 stage, and the finals play-offs. The 12 teams that arrived to the Super 12 stage from the previous edition of the competition have already qualified for this upcoming edition.
ICC World Test Championship Betting
The ICC World Test Championship is a new league competition that was launched in 2019 as part of the ICC’s vision to have each cricket format represented by a top-level tournament. Thus, the World Test Championship is the premier tournament for Test cricket.
The first edition of this tournament ran from 2019–2021 and was won by New Zealand. This makes the Kiwis the defending champions in the second edition of the tournament, which started in 2021 and will end in 2023. This will make betting on cricket even more exciting for Kiwi cricket fans!
The tournament will therefore be played over 2 years and will see 69 matches over 27 series. Each team will play 6 series, half away, half at home, and each series has between 2 to 5 Test matches. So, in total, teams can play anything from 12 to 22 matches. Matches are set to last 5 days each.
Points are then allocated to teams depending on their performances in the matches. There are 12 points for a win, 6 points for a tie, 4 points for a draw, and none for a loss. The top 2 teams from these matches will then advance to the final, the winner of which will be crowned the champion of the tournament.
NZC National Club Cricket Championship Betting
The NZC National Club Cricket Championship is renowned in New Zealand as a premier end-of-season league. The overall winners are crowned the best club of the season in the entire country. The format has recently been updated however.
In previous editions, the championship made use of the One Day format, but it will now be using the T20 one instead. The championship sees the 6 top clubs of the country battling it out in a round-robin styled competition to decide who the best club is.
Whoever competes in the championship is chosen according to how they rank in their relevant association. Thus, the top club of each Major Association (of which there are 6) play against each other over 6 days with 3 matches played side-by-side each day.
The Auckland Cricket’s Cornwall Cricket Club organise the enthralling event at the conclusion of the domestic calendar. This results in the availability of big-name international players to line out with their club sides.
The Indian Premier League, or IPL, is one of the topmost sporting events around and the most popular cricket league in the world. It’s an annual T20 cricket tournament that sees 10 teams contesting for the title of champion. Each team represents a different Indian city, and these are:
- Chennai Super Kings
- Delhi Capitals
- Gujarat Titans
- Kolkata Knight Riders
- Lucknow Super Giants
- Mumbai Indians
- Punjab Kings
- Rajasthan Royals
- Royal Challengers Bangalore
- Sunrisers Hyderabad
Starting from 2022, the IPL will have a new format owing to the fact that 2 new teams have joined the league. These teams are the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans. So, instead of a round-robin format, the teams are going to be divided into 2 groups of 5 teams each.
The groups are based on the teams‘ historical performances so that the best team by historical performance will be in group A and the second best team will go to group B, and so on. Each team will be playing 14 games for a total of 70 games in the league phase.
In the league phase, a team will play every other team in its group twice, thus playing a total of 8 matches. A team will also play the teams in the other group once, with the exception of the team that has a similar historical performance to it, which it will play twice against. And this is how the 14 matches are played.
After the league phase, the top 4 teams go to the playoffs. The best 2 teams will play the first qualifying playoff, with the winner of this match immediately qualifying for the IPL final. However, the loser will get a second chance of qualifying for the final by playing the second qualifying playoff.
As for the other 2 teams: they play a knockout match and whoever wins will play in the second qualifying playoff against the loser from the first qualifying playoff. The winner will then proceed to the IPL final to play against the winner from the first qualifying playoff. The winner of the final is then pronounced the IPL champion!
The Ashes Betting
The Ashes is a Test cricket series that’s contested between England and Australia every year. This contest is the oldest on our list, having started in 1882, making it well over a 100 years old. This also means that the rivalry between the 2 teams runs deep.
In other words, you can expect plenty of excellent cricket as both teams strive to emerge victorious from The Ashes. The competition is held roughly every 2 years, with the venues alternating between English and Australian soil with every edition of the historical tournament.
Each series lasts for 5 Test cricket matches, and the winner of the series will get to keep the infamous Ashes urn, the unofficial trophy of the competition. For those interested, there is also a women’s version of The Ashes that has been contested since 1934.
Big Bash League Betting
Cricket Australia has been hosting the Big Bash League, commonly abbreviated as the BBL, since 2011. It is an annual Twenty20 cricket competition taking place between December and February, which also happens to be the southern hemisphere’s summer season, making it the ideal period for online cricket betting. Similar to IPL betting, BBL betting entails selecting one of eight franchises as the tournament’s undisputed winner:
- Adelaide Strikers
- Brisbane Heat
- Hobart Hurricanes
- Melbourne Renegades
- Melbourne Stars
- Perth Scorchers
- Sydney Sixers
- Sydney Thunder
Women’s Big Bash League Betting
There is also women’s version of the Big Bash League, called the Women’s Big Bash League, or WBBL. The WBBL used to be played concurrently with the men’s competition, but as it gained popularity, it was given its own contest. The WBBL is played in October and November since 2015. There are eight city-based franchises in the women’s Big Bash League, and they are all branded identically to those in the men’s version. Eight teams, each with up to three foreign players, are made up of current and former Australian internationals, some of the top young athletes in the nation.
Caribbean Premier League Betting
The Caribbean Premier League, also known as the CPLT20 or CPL, is an annual T20 cricket tournament that has been ongoing since 2013. The competition, which was started by Cricket West Indies (CWI), is played in July, August, or September, depending on when CWI can fit it in, and is contested by six franchise teams:
- Barbados Royals (previously Barbados Tridents)
- Guyana Amazon Warriors
- Jamaica Tallawahs
- St Kitts & Nevis Patriots
- Saint Lucia Kings (previously Saint Lucia Zouks)
- Trinbago Knight Riders
The Best Strategies for Cricket Betting
In contrast to other forms of gambling, sports betting requires skill. This indicates that planning your actions can increase the likelihood that you will be successful. By picking up the proper betting techniques, you might become a highly successful cricket bettor and claim significant gains.
The following advice will help you get the most of your cricket online betting approach:
1. Bet on Sports That You Are Familiar With
You must be knowledgeable about and passionate about cricket in order to be successful when betting on it. You must keep up with the most recent cricket news, results, and player performance statistics. The following are some of the top and most reliable sites for the most recent cricket news:
- Cricbuzz: This website concentrates exclusively on cricket. It has the most recent cricket news and offers daily updates on the latest ICC standings.
- Espncricinfo: For a very comprehensive coverage of cricket news. The site notoriously crashed in 2010 when Sachin Tendulkar surpassed the record for the highest individual male score in a One Day International match, demonstrating its popularity.
2. Only Bet on Teams You Know a Lot About
If you don’t know much about the cricket teams of South Africa or the West Indies, you shouldn’t be placing online bets on those teams. Keep supporting the New Zealand team because they are the cricket team you are familiar with the most, as well as any other domestic teams you enjoy and follow frequently. Additionally, when betting on cricket, you should stick to betting on the format that you enjoy watching the most.
3. Claim your Free Cricket Betting Bonus
There are plenty of promotions on offer at Betiton, but the one that should be most interesting to cricket bettors from New Zealand is Betiton’s sports betting welcome bonus. When placing their first sports bet, new players can expect to get an extra free bet.
Simple rules apply: if you wager at least $15 on cricket bets, we’ll give you an additional $10 in free bets that may be used on any of our sports markets. So, the extra bet is still applicable whether you wish to wager on football, horse races, or anything else.
Other Sports to Bet On:
- Cricket may be considered as one of the biggest sports in the world, but the title of the biggest sport would easily go to football. We know how much our Kiwi members enjoy football betting, which is why we provide wagers on all the major football tournaments in the world.
- Whilst football is the biggest sport in the world, it’s rugby union that’s closest to the hearts of New Zealanders. And since we know how much Kiwis go cuckoo for rugby betting, our sportsbook is full of rugby games available for wagering.
- Is there anything more exciting than watching a horse race, where jockeys strive to get the best out of their beast? Well, horse betting, that’s what! Here at Betiton™ Bookmakers NZ, Kiwi bettors can find plenty of opportunities to get the most of their horse racing wagers.
- On the theme of racing, we know that our members from New Zealand take their greyhounds betting very seriously. This is why we provide plenty of wagers on greyhound races on our platform.

If we could not win any real money when we bet on cricket, it would be disappointing. When betting on sports, you must remember that you won’t always win. We would have retired long ago if this were the case. Gambling can become habit-forming. We can suggest begambleaware.org if anyone you know needs help overcoming their addiction to gambling.

Research is the key to becoming a successful bettor, and this holds true for the odds you are employing.
What is the difference between pre-match and in-play cricket betting?
There are two different kinds of cricket bets you can make, in-game and pre-match bets. When you make a pre-match cricket bet, you are placing a wager on a certain market before the game has even begun. A cricket in-play bet on the other hand, is one that you make after the game has already begun. Making a cricket bet before the game gives you time to do some study and consider your options. The odds are continually changing with an in-play bet, though, so you do not have as much time to consider your options!
